Lent Activities!

Lenten Lunches: Each Sunday in Lent we enjoy one another’s company over a bowl of soup following the 10:30am service. Please sign up on the counter in the lower hall to serve one Sunday.

“Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John” – Lenten Bible study: Tuesday’s, 1:00-2:30pm, Feb 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27. This program invites participants on a journey into deeper intimacy with God by praying with the words of John the Evangelist and his community. Please sign up in the narthex to order a prayer journal to be used with the group study or individually.

Stations of the Cross – Through Lent we will have stations of the cross posters set up in our sanctuary. Please join in colouring them during or apart from services. A Devotional Guide based on the stations is also available and a great resource for adults and children (or grandchildren) alike to reflect on Jesus’, and our, journey of faith. Please sign up in the narthex to receive one.

Palm Cross Folding and Faith Formation conversation – Saturday, March 24, 10:00-11:30am. Save the date and stay tuned for more information!

Music news!
We are very excited to announce that, at the advice of our Music Director Claire, we have a new electric keyboard.  We will pay for it with existing funds but should you wish to financially contribute, please designate your donation to “music.”

Youth Confirmation
A program for youth who are considering confirmation will begin after church on Sunday, April 22. We will be exploring our Anglican expression of Christian faith along with young people from St. Barnabas. For more information and to register, please contact Christine.

60th Anniversary (Growing in our Community)
Mark your calendars as we have now finalized our Celebration Weekend!  This will start with a catered dinner and presentations at Varsity Community Centre (4303 Varsity Dr NW) on Sat Sep 15th, and a Church Celebration on Sun Sep 16th with the Bishop in attendance. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

Pictures & Stories Wanted!
Ruth & John Mauel are gathering historical materials to make a presentation at our 60th Anniversary. Do you have any pictures of yourself taken in 1958, or a milestone such as when were you baptized, confirmed, graduated, engaged, married, had a baby or any other interesting story that you can share?  Also if you have any historical information or other stories about St. Andrews Anglican Church, then please pass these to Ruth or John at church or via email at ruth1508@gmail.com, Thank You.  Your 60th Anniversary Committee.

News from St. Edmund’s
Thank You for your ongoing support of St. Edmund’s Food Bank.  In 2017 the food bank fed 838 adults and 412 children in 480 hampers.  In December, 114 Christmas Hampers were distributed  which fed 221 adults and 219 children as well as providing a small gift to each person.  St. Edmund provides assistance to families in the community of Bowness, as well as surrounding communities in the Calgary area.

Hello Out-On-The-Towners
Our next place to go is the Selkirk Grille at Heritage Park on Tuesday 27th February 6.30pm. It is just outside the park gates by Gasoline Alley. Dinners are from $30.00. Paying separately no problem, they will add 18% gratuity. Flat fee of $3.00 to park (all night). I need to know if you are coming by  Friday 23rd. Confirm by email or to 403 286 4084. Helen Perry

We have a  date available for flower dedications in 2018: Sept. 3. If you would like this date, please speak to Aline Greaves.

Compost Collection at St. Andrew’s
St. Andrew’s has begun collecting compostable materials in the downstairs and upstairs kitchens. The program will help us keep food and yard waste out of the landfill. It also complies with The City of Calgary’s Waste & Recycling Bylaw that requires onsite diversion of food and yard waste at all businesses and organizations. There are posters in the kitchens describing how to sort the various types of trash we produce on Sundays and throughout the week. Thanks for your help keeping St. Andrew’s clean!

World Day of Prayer  2018
Please join us for the World Day of Prayer Service “All God’s Creation is Very Good”  hosted by Suriname
on Friday, March 2, at 1:30 PM at St Pius X Catholic Church.  Everyone is invited to be part of this annual worldwide Ecumenical Service. This global movement is led by Christian Women who welcome men, women and children to join in prayer and action for peace and justice. Coldest Night of the Year
Walk in solidarity with our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness by joining CNOY on February 24, 2018. We are walking to support Bankview Apartments and Feed the Hungry. Join your congregation’s team for this walking adventure in support of these great programs! Or start a team for your church by registering to walk or volunteer at www.coldestnightoftheyear.org

Retreat at Kingsfold with Matthew Wright.
Matthew Wright, an Episcopal Priest from Woodstock , comes to us very highly recommended by Cynthia Bourgeault and other contemplatives.  He will be leading  three-night retreat at Kingsfold Retreat Centre April 17 – 20th .   More information and registration at www.wisdomcentre.ca

A Public Lecture by Joanne Epply-Schmidt (with a wine and cheese reception to follow) on Storytelling in the Parish, in the Prisons, in the Public, and in Pastoral Care.
Joanne Epply-Schmidt Is an Episcopalian parish priest and university chaplain from Princeton, New Jersey, Joanne has taught and performed storytelling in schools, seminaries, continuing education programs, the adult and juvenile justice systems, and retreat centres. She is a popular presenter at the summer program of the Sorrento Retreat and Conference Centre in Sorrento, BC
