Our next and last painting workshop will be Wednesday, June 21 beginning at 10:00am, when we will paint all remaining donated tiles. Please speak with Christine for further information.
Trickle-Down economic theory and justice: are they mutually exclusive?
In an age of shifting economic orthodoxies, can the creation of ever more wealth lead to greater economic justice for society as a whole? On Monday May 29th from 7-8:30 pm Philip Zachariah and Lloyd Northcott will lead a session with presentations and discussion. It takes place at St Andrew’s and guests are welcome. Philip will elaborate on Trickle Down Theory and Lloyd will explore the Christian tradition of social justice. There will be time for discussion and all shades of opinion will be welcome.
Ladies Spring Potluck – Friday, June 2 @ 6 pm
Jeanne Mosca will provide the ham and buns. Please bring your favourite appetizer, salad, beverage or dessert. There is a note in the narthex with directions to her house if you need it. Hope everyone can come!
Communion Administrants workshop… the ministry of serving a chalice at communion is a special one, whereby you offer God’s grace to your fellow worshippers. We are in need of new people to join this ministry at both our 8:00am and 10:30am services. Please consider attending a brief workshop to review the role on Sunday, June 4 at 9:30am. Contact Michael Hallworth (403-247-1196) or Christine for more information.
St. Andrew’s Jazz Night
St Andrews invites family and friends to a Jazz Concert presenting the Caity Gyorgy Quartet Saturday June 10th at 7pm. Please bring your own snack and some to share, and your choice of beverage. Enjoy great music and hospitality!
Announcements
Baby Food Blitz
For FOOD BANK SUNDAY on May 21, we are asking again this year for a focus on donating BABY FOOD (this is the tenth year St. Andrew’s has participated in this endeavour). During our original tour of the Food Bank, the need for baby food was on the top of the Needs list. Since Food Bank Sunday falls on the long weekend when so many folks are away, we will run this through until May 28 this year. Donations of baby cereal or jars of baby food would be gratefully received by the Calgary Interfaith Food Bank. In the past, some folks have preferred to give a cash donation and Carole Thomson has done the shopping. I will gladly do that again this year as well. Thank you for your support of this ministry.
Grounds Improvement
Our parking lot entrance improvements are almost complete! The concrete sidewalks and stairs are in, making that door once again usable. Please watch your step as the handrails are not yet installed. The front and ramp doors are always a good choice! Watch for ideas about finishing touches coming soon!
Children, Youth and Family Ministry
The advertising for this new position, including a detailed job description, is now posted on our website and through Facebook. Please share the information widely and keep this ministry in your prayers!
Bible Study on the Book of Genesis
The Calgary Inter-Faith Council invites you to join a five-week Interfaith Bible Study looking at the Book of Genesis from Creation to The Flood, on Tuesday afternoons in May (May 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30) from 1:00 to 2:30, at Beth Tzedec Congregation (1325 Glenmore Trail SW). This is a free event and open to all. Please register at wisdomcentre@stlaurence.ca or by calling the St. Laurence church office at (403) 249-6184. The sessions will be facilitated by Rabbi Shaul Osadchey of Beth Tzedec, Rabbi Mark Glickman of Temple B’nai Tikvah, The Rev. Tara Livingston of Holy Nativity, and The Rev. Anna Greenwood-Lee of St. Laurence and The Wisdom Centre.
Thank You for Sharing Our Journey
St. Edmunds has been running a Clothing Bank for 20 years. It originally started as a fundraising opportunity to support the fledgling Food Bank. But at some point all good things end, and the Clothing Bank has been closed. Lack of consistent volunteer help has been the reason, and it is too much work for one person. The Food Bank is self-sufficient and will continue to operate as normal. St. Edmunds will continue to hold the Annual Garage Sale (June 24/17) and the Christmas Tea & Bazaar (Nov. 25/17). Donations for both of these events will be gratefully received. Note: for more information, there is a letter from St. Edmunds on the Outreach bulletin board downstairs.
Financial News
St. Andrew’s family has raised $28, 455 to update our parking entrance bringing us within $2,000 of our fundraising goal! Kudos to everyone for their great support. Our operating deficit to the end of April is on budget, and the increasing numbers of direct deposits is encouraging.
Consecration of Indigenous Bishop-Elect Sidney Black
The Consecration of Indigenous Bishop-Elect Sidney Black will be held on Saturday, June 3, at 11:00 am, at The Arbour on Siksika. All clergy and lay folk are welcome. Clergy are to wear alb and red stole.
Directions to The Arbour:
Three minute drive south of the town of Gleichen, at the intersection of Hwys 901 and 547.
A map can be found here
Parish Photo Directory
St. Andrew’s now has the ability to create a Photo Directory and our own Kara Hallett has kindly offered to be our photographer! Starting on Easter Sunday and for a few of the following Sundays, Kara will be available to take pictures of our parishioners. Our goal is to have the directory ready for June.
Did you know….
we have a question box on the narthex counter next to the prayer requests? What are your questions about faith, theology, church, prayer…?!?
