Lent is Coming!
Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Our annual Pancake Supper is from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, February 13th, this year. The men of St. Andrew’s organise this event and are looking for volunteers to help put on this supper. There will be a volunteer sign up list on the bulletin board leading into the downstairs hall. Please add your name to this list if you are able to help, or contact me by phone or email. Ash Wednesday, Feb 14 @ 7:00pm, “Imposition of Ashes” service. We enter Lent with the sign of ashes, an ancient sign, speaking of the frailty and uncertainty of human life. This quiet service gives us the space to remember our mortality and thereby encourage us to fullness of life.
Lenten Lunches: Each Sunday in Lent we enjoy one another’s company over a bowl of soup following the 10:30am service. Please sign up on the counter in the lower hall to serve one Sunday.
“Meeting Jesus in the Gospel of John” – Lenten Bible study: Tuesday’s, 1:00-2:30pm, Feb 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27. This program invites participants on a journey into deeper intimacy with God by praying with the words of John the Evangelist and his community. Please sign up in the narthex to order a prayer journal to be used with the group study or individually.
Stations of the Cross – Through Lent we will have stations of the cross posters set up in our sanctuary. Please join in colouring them during or apart from services. A Devotional Guide based on the stations is also available and a great resource for adults and children (or grandchildren) alike to reflect on Jesus’, and our, journey of faith. Please sign up in the narthex to receive one.
Palm Cross Folding and Faith Formation conversation – Saturday, March 24, 10:00-11:30am. Save the date and stay tuned for more information!
Music news!
We are very excited to announce that, at the advice of our Music Director Claire, we are in the process of purchasing a new electric keyboard. It should be in place in the next few weeks. We will pay for it with existing funds but should you wish to financially contribute, please designate your donation to “music.”
Lost and Found
The Lost and Found Basket in the Narthex is overflowing. There will be a display table set up at the AGM Sunday, February 4th with the items from the basket. Please peruse the items…hopefully things will find their way home! Items that remain at the end of the AGM will be donated to St. Edmunds or the DI, if applicable.
Confirmation, Reaffirmation, Reception
Our Anglican tradition includes the ritual of commitment to Christian faith known as confirmation. For those baptized as infants, it is part of coming of age in early adolescence but confirmation is not limited to young people. As we grow and mature in our faith, it can be very meaningful to renew our commitment to Christian faith and/or to claim the Anglican way as one’s own. This spring we will have a confirmation preparation program for teens. Adults interested in confirming or reaffirming their faith should also speak to Christine.Altar Flowers
We have a number of dates available for flower dedications in 2018: Apr. 8, Ap. 15, May 27, Sept. 30, Nov. 11 & Dec. 30. If you would like one of these dates, please speak to Aline Greaves.
60th Anniversary Planning
Thanks to all, who attended the meetings after church services to provide input and comments regarding our 60th Anniversary this year.
The ideas were presented at the AGM on Feb 4th and will continue to be fleshed out. We will outline projects that can proceed (with proposed dates) and indicate those who are interested in helping, plus solicit more volunteers. Dave Thomson
Compost Collection at St. Andrew’s
St. Andrew’s has begun collecting compostable materials in the downstairs and upstairs kitchens. The program will help us keep food and yard waste out of the landfill. It also complies with The City of Calgary’s Waste & Recycling Bylaw that requires onsite diversion of food and yard waste at all businesses and organizations. There are posters in the kitchens describing how to sort the various types of trash we produce on Sundays and throughout the week. Thanks for your help keeping St. Andrew’s clean!
